    Brain Tanned Deer Fur

I was wondering if brain tanned fur can be done in the same manner that buckskin is done just leaving out the hair scraping and membrane scraping. Anybody tried it with success? I've got a whitetail buck hide that I may try it on. Thanks, Allen

    Ruffed Grouse

I am thinking about going camping and hunting ruffed grouse in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Wisconsin sometime in October. Anyone here know about the area near Park Falls?

Blue or Brown can be Correct

Just wanted to share some research with everyone. This is in reference to the arming of the British 80th Regiment of Light-Armed Foot that was recruited in America in 1758. I was reading Philip Katcher's Armies of the American Wars 1753-1815 and he quotes on page 34 that from the Official Lace...

I've hunted three days so far in the VA muzzleloading season and finally saw a deer while sitting. I've saw a few while walking, but the only buck I saw saw me first and you know the rest of that story. So, Saturday I sat down at 8 am and watched the squirrels and one hunter pass by and only...

    Used my patchbox for patches

1-1-10 It was 34 degrees Fahrenheit with two to eight mph gusty winds under a mostly cloudy sky when my brother Darrell and I arrived at Big Survey Wildlife Management Area around 8:30 a.m. The snow from the previous week’s snowstorm was still lying and was about three to six inches deep. It...

    1st deer with my York

I woke up a little later than I wanted to Saturday morning and eventually got set up to hunt at 7:30 in the morning. I was watching a wooded hillside next to a pasture. The mast crop was a complete failure and I knew the deer would be feeding on grass. The temperature was 42 F. and the sun was...

    Buckskin roundball bag

Made a ball bag today for my York. I used buckskin that I tanned myself. I sewed it together with hemp twine. I used Walmart leather strapping for the pullstring.

    York range report

Took the York out Wednesday evening. Adjusted the sights shooting at 25 yards. I had to move the point of impact to the left about 2 inches. On Sunday evening I had this 3 inch group using 60 gr. Goex 3fg, .490 rb, and the red striped pillow ticking from Walmart lubed with Stumpy's moose snot...

Here is the cheek piece carving on my York. The wood on this rifle was much harder than the piece of maple I got from Woodcraft! Allen

Is there improvement in my carving?

I've practiced my carving some. Is there improvement? I've learnt that the skew chisel and the gouges must be sharp enough to shave with or they will tear the wood. The Pfeil tools sharpen rather easy though.

    Been praticing carving

I've have been practicing carving today. This is similar to John Greff style. I applied LMF nut brown(on a piece of maple) and took the picture while it was wet. I will practice some more, but so far I like my results.
