What are the best quality reproductions of British Sea Service pistols? A friend is looking at a 18th c sailor impression & I don't have any experience with any of the repros.

    1841 8" howitzer carriage

I recently bought a little (1/2" bore) barrel that matches the US 1841 8"siege howitzer and want to make a carriage for it. I found an image of such a gun mounted on what looks like a Marsilly (sp?) carriage. Solid little wheels are much easier to make than big spoked wheels so that is the type...

    Prices of repro Whitneys

For no particularly good reason other than I don't have one, I would like to get a repro Whitney in .36. The last two that I have seen were a Palmetto which sold for $930 and a Dixie which just sold for $1035. The Dixie I believe to be made by Palmetto and the finish was on the rough side ("new"...

Is it a grenado or a spherical shot?

I have a 3" diameter (same as a 4 pounder) hollow cannon ball with a 1/2" fuse/fill hole. This came out of the river Chargres just below fort San Lorenzo in Panama. Seems small for an exploding shell but a bit big & heavy to be a (hand thrown) grenado. Any thoughts?

    Presentation pistol case

I acquired a nice wooden presentation case that is the exact length and width as the case I have for my 1851 Colt Navy. The problem is that it is about 1/4" thinner & will not close on any of the .36 (navy) caliber pistols that I have been able to try. The lid hits both the cylinder & grips &...

    A Chronology od Black Powder

Has anyone read a copy of Richard D. Frantz's book "A Chronology of Black Powder"? It is a very scarce title that is supposedly an excellent source on the subject. I have never seen a copy for sale on any of the book search engines & wonder if it is worth continuing the hunt. (No telling what...

    Testing black powder

I just got a new (to me) book - "The Big Bang - a History of Explosives" by G. I. Brown 1998. The first 80 or so pages (about 1/3 of the book) are devoted to black powder. Talk of lead (how soft, where to find it, etc) in other posts made me take special notice of a use for lead that I had never...

    Pistol Cases

I am considering making cases for four C&B revolvers. The guns are Colt 1851 & 1861 Navies and a Pocket Police and a Pocket Navy. Which would be the better plan? 1) make four cases, one for each. 2) make two double cases, one for the larger guns & one for the pocket versions. 3) make two double...

    Leech & Rigdon

A friend has offered to let me buy one of his Leech & Rigdon replicas. Both are in excellent shape, one is an Uberti, the other a High Standard. Any info on which is the most authentic replica, which is rarer (harder to come by) & is there any difference in shooting accuracy?

    Colt 2nd generation

For anyone interested in acquiring a 2nd generation percussion Colt revolver, Cowans Auctions has an auction with quite a few of them coming up in December. Their "estimate of sale price" look to be pretty reasonable but as always with an auction, one may go high & another low. Pretty to look at...
