Heat Gun for Soldering and a few other questions

Make sure you CLEAN the surface well where you want the solder, and tin both pieces as others have suggested. Sweat the two together without adding anymore solder. Preheat your barrel in an oven first as the barrel mass with draw away heat from your work area.

    India made guns ,

I believe there are premade drill bits used by electricians that may serve you well. (depends on how long the barrel is but they sell them at HomeDepot) 2 tenths isn't much - can you put your vent in and then drill down the barrel till you hit the hole? Just a thought..

    Finished rifle

Make sure you have a strong non-moving bench and sharp tools. Practice practice practice, and TOTW has sheet brass - and tools can always be found there or Ebay. Good luck - super nice job on all the rest!

Looking for pointers on first build.

That is an easy statement to say but very hard to do. MSW is 100% correct though! My first was done in days, which should have been weeks. The second one is taking me longer and of course I am trying different things with it. My advise it to do an inventory first, with a loose fit to see what...

    chisel sharpening

I use a 400 grit black wet type abrasive paper that you'd fine in auto stores and place it on a piece of steel plate that was made for me so it is truely flat (glass plate would work - but they don't survive a drop well). Place the paper on the plate and touch up the edge - if you need to hold...

    Cost of a Kit Build

I read all the posts to date - and if you are a klutz I understand why you wnat another to build it for you. Personally I'd buy one already built rather than a kit and have it built. I have built one from a kit, no savings but lots of learning took place. On my second, this one is for the...

    Candy Striping?

A 12 volt battery would be lots safer - 120 volts = boom! Why not take a piece of foil and wrap to protect the wood - torch it to get the strips? Or wrap it in a thin piece of "steel/iron" and wet it - let rust and finish. The rust would be darker and prolly look pretty cool. Maybe you could...

    Blind Tap/Hole

Be super careful, make sure you do not drill through the barrel. As otehrs have said - two taps with a bottom tap as last - do not over tighten the tap or you will break it and it is a bear to get it out! :(

    Removing Tru-Oil

Wear gloves - no problem - HomeDepot has 2 kinds People may think you are a doctor gettign ready to do an exam but your are "protected". :haha:

Brioken brass screw in stock--how to get it out

I have done the following: Drill a small hole in the center of the remaining screw - if you can flatten it a bit using a dremel fly cutter all the better - new drill it a bit larger depending upon how much stock you have left and how small the orignal drill you used. Get out that 8 piece small...

    Traditions Flintlock Kentucky Rifle

I went to Traditions the other day - they do not offer a flintlock in a Kentucky kit. Drat! The Kentucky they offer fits me well - though I do not like the trigger. Currently finishing up the cussing kit.

    Good kit for first build?

In my case the hardest part to building the kit is the bluing/browning of the barrel! I still haven't settled into what I am gonna do :hmm:

    soldering silver to stainless

    wood removal tools?

These links should show you the diff. http://www.gp.lib.mi.us/information/about/t_spokeshaver.htm http://www.gp.lib.mi.us/information/about/t_drawknife.htm For the non-experienced a spoke shaver would be better. In either case they should be sharp and practice is needed. More so with the...

Digging intot his a bit I found---> Charcoal Bluing From: Clyde Baker's Modern Gunsmithing. Make a box of heavy sheet iron large enough to hold the largest part to be blued. It's not necessary to rivet or weld the box...merely fold the corners. Fill it with pulverized wood charcoal in lumps...

I am a reading and working on it. I may end up having to aneal it, it is close. So thanks to all! A true learning experience for sure! Especially when the whole thing is off one way or the other or both! On another post someone made mention of a scraper being you best friend, it is certainly...

    To bend or cut

thanks - the issue is the toe (the part that is facing down) is a wee bit off compared to the rest. I know the brass bottom plate will cover some of it but it just bothers me that it is off a bit. It is close, a couple bus. cards thicknesses off. Brass is hard to bend.. Thanks again.. I'll...
