What is the reasonable distance to quickly kill a turkey with a muzzleloader?

As far as you can make a head shot with a patched ball.

    Cleaning

I use very hot soapy water, sucking water up through the nipple hole into the barrel with a snug patch on a jag. Then a bronze bore brush. And then hot water rinse, and then an alcohol rinse. Bore patches come out pristine.

What is your method to combat offhand wobble?

Well, I’m formally an avid Metallic Silhouette shooter, so I have a lot of practice. It requires the development of muscle groups that aren’t really used for anything else to be really good at it. That said, I always use shooting sticks in the field.

    Bear Grease Question

Hey, all I can say is my bear oil rendered out as an amber, and congealed white in the refrigerator.

Limits of Hard Cast Roundball when hunting

These laws exist to stifle hunting, and that’s it. Leaving that ridiculous state was the best decision of my life. That said, a well placed patched ball over fifty caliber or so is reliably deadly on big game. It’s a non-issue.

Montana muzzleloading season, blaze orange, camouflage

To be honest, I love living in Montana, but there are some really stupid people out there. I’m fine wearing orange.

    Tin Can Test

The correct term is “Tinned can”, from the tin solder used to seal the steel can, not “Tin can”. Food cans were never made from tin.

    Turkey Hunting with round ball

    Sure, head/neck shots only.

    Gemmer Hawken review

Yup, I’ve got it zero’ed to impact an inch high at fifty yards (I use a six o’clock hold on the bullseye). And the accuracy with my randomly selected load is fine. I’ll take a deer and a cow elk this season with it.

Polishing the bore on a new ML.............

Things must be looking up then. I just bought an Investarms “Gemmer Hawken” that’s being imported and the patches are pristine. No abrasions, cuts, or burn-through.

    Gemmer Hawken review

Just to restate my position, yes, obviously a FIXED SIGHT rifle needs some extra height in the front sight so that the end user can adjust his Point Of Impact. No reasonable person is debating that. But this rifle came with an ADJUSTABLE rear sight. Any elevation issue should have been within...

    Gemmer Hawken review

    Agreed, sloppy engineering.

    Gemmer Hawken review

Not odd at all. The new importer put his name on it, and. Investarms still has their regular markings.

    Gemmer Hawken review

Yeah, I’m a gunsmith so it’s not a big deal. But for a rifle with an adjustable rear sight to have such mismatched sights is just sloppy engineering.

    It’s available from Muzzle-loading.com now.

    Gemmer Hawken review

Indeed, you’re correct. That’s the “high school trigonometry” I referred to.

    Gemmer Hawken review

Just picked up a Gemmer Hawken, and thought I’d offer a review. This was my experience, yours may differ. Ordered it from it’s new importer in La Grand Oregon, and was pleased to receive it is lightning fast time. Out of the box the fit of barrel into the channel wasn’t too inspiring. A bit...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Ordered a new Investarms Gemmer Hawken, percussion, in .54 caliber.

    Hawken rifle. Lowering the comb?

I know what you mean. I don’t have a problem with getting whacked in the face, but the comb seems a bit high to get a good sight picture. If I move my fact back toward the butt plate, it’s better. But I might strip the finish and contour it down.

    Soldering ramrod pipes to barrel

Interesting question. It seems to be human nature to insist on doing something “the way it’s always been done”. It appears that there’s historical evidence that underribs haven’t always been a thing. If I were you, I’d go ahead with your plan. You can always change it later if you like.
