last day of the NY season

Let me reiterate...i have no problem with the PRB...i practice all the time with them and have shot deer with them with favorable outcomes. I'm not a newbie when it comes to BP and have been shooting it for 18 years. I shoot 3-5 deer a year with archery, shotgun, and BP gear...no CF rifle...

last day of the NY season

Thanks for the congrats. I agree with what you've said. The problem for me lies in the very short barrel of my rifle. I simply don't get the velocity out of a 20" barrel, and so i don't get "typical" energy out of a 180 grain prb. I want a heavier bullet to maximize my kinetic energy...

last day of the NY season

I managed to take a doe on the last day with my .50 white mountain flinter...65 yard shot. I used a saboted hornady 240 grain xtp hollow point. I normally shoot roundball in the late season, but wanted to try this bullet out. It did ok, but nothing stellar. I think i'm going to go back to a...

    T/C White Mtn Carbine

I shot my one and only deer with a white mountain .50 flinter last december at 110 yards. I love mine and have a few others in cap (hence my screen name). I shoot 90 grains of FFF even though I know it probably doesn't burn it all because of the short barrel. With the short barrel, you...

    Lead hollow point or AeroTip?

I love the powerbelt hollowpoints. I shoot them out of my cap rifles. Never used the aerotips. The hollow points have left wonderful blood trails for me.

    period correct flint advice needed

I was talking to a pretty knowledgeable flinter the other night, and he mentioned the Tulle as well in .62 smoothbore. Is that the same as the french fusil (don't know the proper spelling)

    Got a flintlock for Christmas

Well, you already know the rule "keep your powder dry". With the flinter, just add one more rule to it...."keep your flint sharp" (just kidding...there's more but you'll love it!!!) :hatsoff:

Disappointing end to a tough season

That's just bad luck I guess. Nothing you could do...you made a good shot and decided to play it safe and wait to track. It was the right decision. Everything happens for a reason...maybe they did need it more....who knows.

    PA Primative / traditional

Snagg, yeah, they're well fed down there. If anyone would like to meet on a saturday and do some hunting, it might sway me to buy the NR license. I did alot of solo hunting this year, and am sorta bored with it. I wouldn't mind going out with a few other rocklockers. Anybody let me know if...

    PA Primative / traditional

I've been wanting to hunt PA for a couple years now in the late season. I bowhunted pretty hard a couple years ago, south of Sherman/Clymer NY. I had such a good flintlock hunt/first flintlock deer here in NY last weekend that dad told me to retire the rifle though

    Hunting Pistol?

I always understood the law to say that you could carry a single shot BP pistol, as long as it wasn't loaded. I was interested in getting one just to carry and play the part. I don't have a permit though. Can anybody clarify on carrying unloaded?

    round ball penetration??

I like the fffg in the flint....because I can prime with it and carry only one powder. If I have time, sometimes I'll grind it down so it's finer.

    round ball penetration??

i love short barrels too. I remember going into a store in New Hampshire when I was 13, and falling in love with the WMC's. Only problem was that my dad apparently didn't love me enough to get me one. Just kidding. I ended up getting a Cherokee kit instead and built it. Years later, in...

    round ball penetration??

Easy there....I haven't persisted in anything. I only said that I remembered reading, a long time ago, two opposing articles on long barrel vs. short barrel. Even the TC manuals recommend the same charges for the carbine barrels....not that I believe that is good advice, considering all the...

    round ball penetration??

I was using fffg in the flinter, but have usually used ffg in the cap rifles i have. I will probably go to fffg in all of them now, especially since I got some free cans from a guy i know. I once read that TC discontinued white mountain carbines/penn hunter carbines because of the short barrel...

    Ha...i forgot about that....thanks Claude

    round ball penetration??

I know i pushed it. I had read numerous times that .50 roundball is basically good to 75 yards. I'm very interested in getting a period correct long barreled flinter in .54 for my area (catskill mountains near cooperstown which was settled around 1740). That's probably what I will do. any...

I want a period correct flinter

What would be a period correct flintlock for upstate ny, cooperstown area(catskill region)when it was settled (1740 ish)? Would it be a "colonial longrifle" which was popular during the american revolution? I'm looking at track's website and it lists several. see below...

    round ball penetration??

After getting my buck a couple days ago, I'm starting to wonder what I can do to improve my roundball performance. Maybe I can't do anything. I put 90 grains of fffg in my .50 white mountain carbine, which should be a solid load. I've read that, due to the short 20" barrel, I may be really...
