Got a refund on a Howdah

After reading through some of the posts on the Pedersoli Howdah pistol, I found them on sale through Cabela's for $599. Mine came in today. I went to the store to pick it up and they were kind enough to let me open the box, wipe the gun down (really, really covered with oil) and check fit and...

    Knapping my musket flint

Had my 1728 musket out yesterday for a bit and had a few misfires late in the session. Wasn't getting much spark. Thought the flint was getting a bit dull and I recalled a method I believe I saw described somewhere on this site whereby you bounce the flint against the heel of the frizzen...

    The Highwayman

Pulled out an old Loreena McKennett CD the other day and am captivated by her rendition of this poem. I'm surprised this hasn't been developed into a film of some kind. The events take place in 18th century rural England and the description of the Highwayman is: "He'd a French cocked hat on...

    When was GPR made?

I just bought (off Gunbroker) but haven't take delivery yet of a .54 cal Lyman GPR. This gun does not have the cut out area in the rib for the ramrod retention spring, so must be at least 20+ years old. Serial number is 141703.. is there a way for me to find out when this gun was made?

    Hodge Podge Mortimer

I suppose, based on the cost of a new standard Mortimer, this isn't a bad deal for what it has but still is it just me or is this truly a garish hodge podge.... Link

    Another Lyman GPR comment/question

My last Lyman GPR was over 15 years ago - I ordered it and when I took it out of the box I thought "what the H###!" The factory cut a notch in the underbarrel rib and put in a leaf spring, with a screw, just to keep the ramrod from falling out. I hated it and called the US warranty place...

    Cookson Fowler

Has anyone seen one the New England Fowlers (Cookson marked) from Middlesex Village Trading Companies? Dog lock, very long bbl. Like the looks but was hoping to find someone who has one or has seen one. PS - and no, I don't want to discuss the quality of Indian made guns. Have one, a 1728...

    homemade flush kit

Here's an easy, inexpensive kit you can use at home or anywhere there's a garden hose. The silver fitting is an adapter for a sink faucet that has a male garden hose thread on the outer end - the brass fitting is just a female to female garden hose adapter, the white fitting is an RV blowout...

    Loading the musket

The musket I just got is the first of its kind I've owned and I'd like to try my hand at making (rolling) and shooting paper cartridges. Plenty of info out there on how to make them and there's probably a video somewhere on shooting them but the question I have is what end of the paper...

    How bright were they?

From what I've read, infantry soldiers spent a good deal of time polishing/burnishing their muskets. How bright are we talking about?

    Lock plate with an emu?

Got a couple pictures in today of a gun that is in an estate sale. In the center of the lockplate there is a bird with its head pointed toward the butt of the gun. It's an emu or some such bird, large body, long neck and legs. Does anyone have knowledge of that marking?

    What size ball?

Finally got to the range with the 1728 musket but I had no round balls other than some .600 left over from another gun. Used a heavy patch, folded double and it worked ok, but am looking for proper load. Notation that came with the gun indicates a .703 bore. Would a .690 ball be too tight for...

    Richland Arms Wesson rifle

Got a line on an unfired Richland Arms Wesson .50 caliber boxlock rifle. I remember looking at these 30 or more years ago and thinking they were pretty nice (compared to the lightweight painted cheapo one from EMF)but they disappeared before I could put money aside to buy one. Anyone have...

What would be an appropriate sling for the French 1728 musket (and does anyone know where I could get one?)

    Smoothbores from the Discriminating General

The Discriminating General (Military Heritage.com) offers a number of smoothbore muskets that do not have the touch hole drilled. Their guarantee seems good but I know nothing of this company other than what I see on their website. We've seen reviews of Loyalist Arms guns but nothing of these...

    Meeks Crossing

Caught this movie again the other night. I know it's not historically correct due the wagon and people count but what really attracts me to this is the stark reality of it all. Don't think I've seen a movie that more accurately captured the hardships those early Oregon Trail travelers endured...

    Pedersoli Mortimer rifle

Looking for feedback on Pedersoli's Mortimer flintlock rifle. I really like the looks of this gun but am a bit leary of buying one without hearing what others have found. Quality ok? This is supposed to be a copy of an English sporting rifle of the mid 1700s - I did see an original English...

    Looking for Anthony Palyszeski

Does anyone know what happened to Anthony Palyszeski? He built some really nice guns and used to have a site frenchfusils.com. All the links/contact info I can find for him lead to dead ends or disconnected numbers. rm
