Can you get 3 aimed shots a minute?

Guys, the 3 shots a minute thing is military. Try it from your bag with patch round ball and it's a shortcut to a dry ball or broken rammer. Even the Colonial Militia, armed with their personal guns didn't try to reach this rate of fire. To do it, you must have premeasured cartridges, a cartridge box, cap box and practice, practice, practice. Entirely possible with a military arm, flint or percussion, and have I mentioned practice yet?

I absolutely cannot do it. It's fun to see if we can do what those who came before could do, and history is why we love the old or repro guns. I envy those who can do the 3 minute thing. I'm pretty sure it would take me at least 10. I feel like I have committed a horrible offense if I don't wipe between shots, which makes for really slow loading.

It takes a little practice but it isn't all that difficult. One needs to be organized, focused and familiar with their equipment. Hints: stick your bayonet in the ground in front of you and rest your rammer on it rather than return it, take the top flap of your cartridge box and tuck it under the waist belt so the box is always open, turn the top flap of the cap box over and tuck it in your belt, get a good shooting stance and don't move from it, focus on the targets and never look away. Of course it goes without saying you need a proper fitting minie and an excellent lube. Having someone shooting back at you might help too. There was (no longer shooting) a skirmisher that could consistently get off 4 aimed shots per minute and a majority of them were hits, one of the best shooters in the N-SSA. Hey, if I could do it a caveman probably could too. ;)
Who did you skirmish with? I shot with the 69th NY for five years. I have been out of it for a long time now

most of the time it takes me forever anyway cause im too busy yapping!

I have read about NSSA seems kinda fun
There's no other shooting sport like it. While I support the NMLRA, paper punching is seriously boring. Nothing quite like being on the line with seven team members busting targets as fast as you can. Wiping between shots need not apply.

We have members from a lot further away than Pennsylvania, why don't you come down to Ft. Shenandoah, just outside Winchester, to skirmishers in action. N-SSA members will be hosting a recruiting skirmish on Saturday, March 9th. which is open to anyone. Attendees only need to provide ear and eye protection. Arms and lunch are provided at no cost. There will be instruction on loading and firing the rifle musket and yes you will be shooting. There will be an artillery demonstration and the attendees will be formed into teams and have a chance to shoot in a mini-skirmish with breakable targets. Anyone who is interested can PM me for more information.

There will be 15 skirmishes held at Ft Shenandoah this year including two National Skirmishes and 37 skirmishes total including locations in PA, NY, AL, VA, MA, OH, IL, & NC.

There's also a recruit skirmish being held in PA. I'm thinking the date is in April

Out team has 2 members from Pittsburgh and they make almost all the skirmishes here at the fort sometimes bringing family with them. PA skirmishes: April 26-28 & June 7-9, Springtown, June 28-30 Ft. Ross. Ohio skirmishes: April 26-28 & June 21-23 Pleasant Hill, June 7-9 Centerburg.

When I was N-SSA active (in my twenties and thirties) I routinely shot 7 rounds in two minutes of aimed fire, with high probability of hits. Pre-loaded powder tubes and lubed Minies.
Last month I shot a primitive biathlon with a timed event. With patch and ball, starting with an empty gun and loading from the pouch, I got three hits in two minutes and four seconds. The event was won with a score of just over a minute and a half.
