That stinks Fred. I hunted a piece of SL a couple of weeks ago, where at the gate there are big signs posted with no horseback riding. What do I see when walking down that gated trail? Horse tracks. Unreal.My state land hunting Saturday, 12 horses with 12 people. 4 dirt bikes 4 people. Horses are allowed, dirt bikes not allowed.

You got that right Banjo. I do like eating squirrels, but kill way more in the early season,'you know, when it's stinkin hot and you loose a pint of blood from the skeeters. Late season not much action, but man oh man, sitting on the tailgate and sipping on some coffee, that's living. I will admit I kinda miss those Marlboro Reds on those days. The past few years, between work and health, my hunting was very limited.
May the next season be good for all of us. We just gotta hang in there.

I'm still getting the hang of this being retired stuff. I feel like I should have hunted more than I did. But to be honest with you Fred, I've never squirrel hunted in the late season as much as this year. September is just down the road. Turkey is around the corner, I've been seeing robins, so spring weather should be here soon so time to get the boat together. Going to do some quality range sessions with ye old Crockett rifle, so we'll survive.
Got to say, one of the best times was sitting on the tailgate after hunting.
I told my wife I wanted to make a daily journal next year of my squirrel hunts. She then got me this for Valentine’s Day. Lol
She’s a good one. She’s put up with me 43 years.
If you made some xerox copies of that cover you'd have some pretty slick targets Jim.
I'll usually skin and clean them, put them in a Ziploc bag in a small cooler, then have my celebratory coffee and Marlboro Red. Gave up smoking a few years ago, so now I just drink more coffee

Well, today the PA Squirrel season closes untill September 14th. I wanted to go one more time, but we have Gale force winds at the moment. So I guess I'll just start checking the gear, and getting it put away. Already ran some Barricade down the bore of the New Englander. Wanted to thank you fellas again for the "squirrel camp vibe" on here. I'm mostly a solo hunter, so it's good reading your posts and sharing some. Hopefully helping someone out also. With any luck, we can keep it going until we get into the thick of it. I'll try and come up with something every now and then. Some of you fellas are lucky enough to have a spring season to get ready for. Take care all!
Yep, way too windy here in Dauphin County today. I’m looking forward to September already.

I didn't read all 22 pages, but y'all have really made me jump on the "way back machine" and reminisce about 50+ years ago in Rocky Hollow, running around feral like Huckleberry Finn. My daddy always chuckled and said "we used to have lots of squirrels around here till I got Stanley that .22" (Glenfield model 60). Lol I just salivated about an endless supply of Grandma's squirrel gravy and biscuits, and had no thoughts about conservation. We had a little black Feist dog that could really find and tree them. We never named him, would just call "hey dog, come here." etc. Eventually he answered to that, no joke, his name became Hey Dog. I still tear up thinking about him, the little flea bit varmint, we were real pals. If I racked the slide on that rifle he would hear it and jump straight up in the air and bark and take off down the trail.
I used to see a lot more red fox squirrels, which I think is due now to less row farming and fence rows. It's gone back to big timber. Bobwhites gone, too. Maybe I'll pick me up a little bp squirrel gun or a kit, we'll see. Sorry for the rambling, old guys sometimes gotta do it. yellowhammer out.

Sunday will be the last day here.
More than likely I'll be working Saturday and Sunday. Plus, high chance for rain.
I'll be shooting out back this year in-between seasons. I'll Give my Crockett Rifle a good workout. Plus a couple others.
We will keep this thread going for sure.
I feel everyone gets something from it.
I still like to post pictures of a successful hunt. So have to keep it going.
P.S. a good cup of mud and a good smoke was a hard thing to... beat and lay it down.
