    Breechplug blowby

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I have decided to take it to a gunsmith since I am as handy as a fistful of thumbs. However now I am armed with a fistful of information to discuss with him. Thanks again.

    Breechplug blowby

I am certainly not shooting it and will talk to a gunsmith about the various options provided in this thread. Certainly not looking to get hurt or hurt (God forbid)anyone else. Time to practice with my flintlock until I get this fixed. I love the gun and it is extremely accurate but now is the...

    Breechplug blowby

Thanks for the replies. I thought about a shim of some sort and wondered if a crush washer would do the trick. Where would I get a thin lead washer that would work? Should I take it to a gunsmith to have it done? I am pretty much a black powder neophyte.

    Breechplug blowby

I have a Jonathan Browning Mtn. rifle that was left loaded for years and of course the end of the barrel and breech plug are corroded. I have removed the plug and cleaned both it and the barrel however when I took it to shoot yesterday I discovered there was some blowby between the breechplug...

    Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle

I have two of them , a .45 and a .50. I have had the .50 cal for about ten years and I love it. It isn't stock as a previous owner replaced the Browning barrel with a Rice barrel of the same length. It shoots like a dream. It is just heavy enough to make it easier to hold on target and the...

    Jonathan Browning Mtn. rifle

I thought about that but if I have it re-bored it will need a different breech plug and there are no parts available for this rifle anymore. The question then becomes would a different brand fit it and how much work would the tang need to fit.

    Jonathan Browning Mtn. rifle

I actually have shot it and although it is a mite rough to load it will still put all 5 in a pie plate at 25 yds. I'm hoping if I can clean up the breech and work up a proper load that it will have at least acceptable accuracy.

    Competetion Shooting

There is an older Lyman on Gunbroker right now at a $100.00 starting price. Being one of the older ones it should have nice wood and good fit and finish. Could be a cheap way to start shooting with a more than decent gun..

    Jonathan Browning Mtn. rifle

I recently purchased a JBMR and on arrival I discovered that it had been stored loaded. I managed to remove the charge however it was obvious by its condition that it had been in there for years. I ran a wet cleaning patch down the bore and when I tried to pull it out it was stuck in the bore. I...

    Black vs. Pyrodex

That explains it to me, also. I guess it was something I was told starting out, no real explanation, just never do it. I only remember ever purchasing pyrodex once years ago when black wasn't available and I think I gave most of the container away. Just goes to reinforce the saying, out of the...

    Black vs. Pyrodex

My grandson asked me the other day about something I have never considered in forty years of black powder shooting. The background is: I just purchased a 50 cal TC Hawken and a load of supplies for a ridiculous price. Amongst the items was three containers of Pyrodex 2 rifle,2 pistol. We shot...

    Jonathan browning mtn rifle

I would like to add Vernier sights and a globe front to my rifle. Any suggestions as to what would be a proper fit? Thanks

    Jonathan Browning .45

I learned my lesson. I have already ordered jags from TOW with steel threads, no more brass jags for me. Thank goodness for the forum and all the information provided by its members.

    Jonathan Browning .45

Well I did it. Went to the range, dribbled in 5-6 grains of powder and shot it out. Thanks for all the info.

    Jonathan Browning .45

had a bad morning cleaning my JB Mountain rifle. I pushed a wet patch down the barrel with a cleaning jag on the end of my range rod and the jag snapped off. No idea why or how. Now I have a jag and patch stuck at the breech. My options appear to be 1.Wait until our next shoot in July and use...
