A couple of rifles that need some love

Try Numrich Gun Parts in New Yook. They might have something you can use. Also, Google gun parts suppliers or muzzleloading gun parts supplier. You might get lucky.

    Beware Etsy! Atten. Sellers/buyers

The Social Security Number on a 4473 has been optional for many years. I never have given it. An ATF agent told me it helps making the background check go faster. I have a CCW permit. With that, in most Ohio gun shops, I do not have to submit to a background check.

    No Sights?

I believe it has been said many times that the average defense distance is about 7 yards. That is why concealed carry guns should be sighted in at that distance. --- My wife and I both practice at that distance with our concealed carry guns. --- By the way, I have a medal I won at a long-range...

    No Sights?

There is a different skill set in Cowboy action shooting. I did it for about 10 years. It simulates a gun fight, where you don't have time to take a precisely aimed shot. In a gun fight, if you took the time to properly put your sights on an attacking desperado and slowly pull the trigger you...

    Loading Preference

You are referring to loading a ball. I believe the original post refers to loading shot. The original post did not clearly state what they meant.

    Thompson Center Bought from S&W

I have worked in 3 different gun stores over the years. Unfortunately, you are correct. If someone asked me a question I always responded with the truth. If I didn't know I told them so. I have seen co-workers brag, spread half-truths, and even outright lie to a customer. I also refused to...

    Black powder on smokeless ranges

I used to work in an indoor gun range and gun store. We cleaned the shooting range and replaced the air conditioning/gun smoke retainer filters once a week. You might not believe how dirty those filters can get. We banned black powder shooting at our range because black powder residue fouled the...

    Show your Muzzleloading gems.

Here's my only two muzzleloading pistols. The top one is a Kentucky, 50 caliber percussion, that I built from a kit. The bottom one is an FIE 45 caliber. I don't know what model it is. It was sold to the Gun Room where I used to work. It was in poor shape, so I disassembled it, stripped all...

How do you stabilise your rifle for load testing/sighting in?

I recently acquired a Lead-Sled. I have not used it yet. My theory is that with muzzleloaders and unspeakable firearms I want to know what the gun can do. After I establish that I then shoot from a prone or standing position. I do that to improve and/or maintain my accuracy.

Wonder Just How Many Ways Can One Load a Smoothbore...??

It is not that they were cheap back then. Out on the frontier supplies were hard to come by. They experimented and came up with the smallest caliber that would do the job (to save lead) and the smallest powder charge (to save powder) that would do the job. This enabled them to keep shooting in...

    My first powder horn.

That is called gaining experience. --- By the way, you did a great job on your first horn.

    Naming your guns?

Take it from a guy that has been married 3 times. If you want that flintlock buy it BEFORE you get married.

    Arbor Problem?

I have been told that old Uberti's are better than old Pietta's and that new Pietta's are better than new Uberti's. I have not done or heard of a comparison test. Has anyone else?

    Getting too many misfires

I take pipe cleans and run the end of one down the channel to ensure the channel is clear and free of any oil or debris, especially if I have had a misfire. (I rarely do have a misfire, but it does sometimes happen to the best of us.)

Hawken Rifles, What's All The Hoopla?!

The Hawken and other great plains rifle designs came about because of the bigger game out west. Lewis & Clark reported that they were going to need larger caliber rifles due to bison, grizzly bears, and such.
