    1st grackle down

The neighbor next door, when I was growing up, used to buy my brother and I 20 ga. shells to rid the "pest" species of birds from his cherry orchard. Those were the days...

    Coyotes

East central Indiana, my sis's Terrier, last week. Coyote grabbed her in their woods. http://i1001.photobucket.com/albums/af138/RTDoug_bucket/yote%20attack/coybite.jpg Vet said she put up a heck of a fight. Lucky to have made it, I'd say

Got it directly from him. That's what I was thinking too.

Is getting the lock "tuned" worth it?

Slowly getting the build together, and I have a question. My advisor on building this smoke stick has suggested sending my Chamber's Late Ketland to someone to have it tuned. He explained how a little spring relief here, polishing there will go a long way to make it much better. I am in between...

    Any know tricks

I have a mainspring vise, and it works well. But, while I had the mainspring in the vise, and had to remove the frizzen spring, I used vise grips. I just cut a couple of strips of thin cardboard to block the jaws' teeth. Think about the cardboard from a 24 pack of your favorite beverage, tablet...

A month or two maybe three ago, the American Rifleman had a good article on Dutch guns used in the Revolutionary War. Regards Ooops, I see you want early 1700's. Disregard

How to get a satin finish ?

I don't know about Tru-Oil, but with Tung Oil finish as the final few coats build up to the depth I want, I will rub back with burlap. This is after the 5-10 minute cure time that the directions call for.

As I inlet the barrel tang...

... and the barrel seats deeper into the channel, each time I go to remove the barrel to check the inletting black, there is less and less of the barrel to get a purchase on to remove it from the stock. I am afraid of taking it by the muzzle and lifting, as it stresses the flat at the rear of...

    Linseed oil

Has anyone tried the "Tried and True" brand that woodcraft carries? They have a finish that is BLO and beeswax. "Original Wood Finish is a highly polymerized linseed oil, combined with Beeswax. It dries to a fine finish reminiscent of the patina of well cared for antique furniture, yet it is...

    Jeff White knife

Howdy, I have a Jeff White patch knife handled in Osage Orange. Great value, good steel, hand made by him. I've seen him at Friendship building knives, forging etc. He is from Galveston Indiana, and is at the Indy 1500. Jeff told me that if I ever didn't like the knife he would buy it back from...

    Custom vs Production

In a custom gun you can get exactly what you want, based on your personal taste. Hand fit, hand finished pieces which cannot be machine produced. The range of styles, time periods, and calibers is not available in production guns as far as I know. I find that the historical draw of the non-mass...

    Southern influenced build

Thanks dyemaker, I have googled the s**t out of them, and found only 2 or 3 that don't have the deeply curved crescent butt plate. Don't know if I can straighten one, so I want to be able to find one. I guess a good book is what I need.

    Southern influenced build

Yes, that's what I am looking for, references to look at so I can determine what I see in my minds eye as pleasing, with a name to put on it and follow that pattern of gun. Thanks
