Discussions of frugality are hijacking this thread. Most of us don't got 5k$ for a piece but if we did................

Who are the top 5 muzzleloading builders in the U.S.?

Martin for Northampton rifles both transitional and federal period. Brooks for carved and engraved fowlers. Kettenberg for amazing carefully researched hand crafted locks, stocks, and furniture. Shipman for very neat PA rifles. Pratt for very cool iron mounted Woodburyesque stuff. Wheland is...

    Fowler: Price and recommendation

The Caywood NW gun is a good value. Best workmanship I've seen for the price. The big roundface Rowe lock is dependable.

    Williamsburg Bess Photos

We were there over the 4rth of July this year. The Dewitt Wallace decorative arts museum is also full of firelocks. A great collection of original Brown bess muskets is on hand that includes all the pattern dates. European high art guns are also displayed. Awe inspiring for me were 4 recently...

    first black powder gun?

The Pedersoli Kodiak you are considering retails for about 1 grand. If that price is within your means consider something like an "in the white" semi custom. You would finish the wood and metal. TN Valley Muzzleloading, Tip Curtis among others can get you started. Pick a style and then let the...

    NorthStar Canoe Gun

I'm with RussT here. If you get the canoe gun you may someday wish you had gone with a 3 to 3 1/2 foot barrel. if you get the long gun you will never regret it.

    Pa. Early Season

It's doe only. You need a doe tag for the WMU yer in and a muzzleloader stamp. Inlines are allowed all 7 days. Jr and Sr license holders can carry centerfire the last 3 days. Hunting pressure is light. I have to chuckle as every year it seems I have an eyeball to eyeball encounter with a...

    Jacobsburg Rifle Frolic

I stopped by Sunday afternoon to look around. Things were quiet. The longrifle museum had an eye popping Mark Wheland lion and lamb rifle on display along with a half dozen other nice contemporary pieces and a nice assortment of horns. This event is on the site of the Henry Boulton works and...

    Got my Caywood Yesterday

Thanks for the correction  I did a Wiki on varnish after reading your post. Varnish ingredients would be the oil, resin (from coniferous trees), and turpentine as a thinner I suppose. This formula cures to a hard gloss. Now I feel better about my gun's finish.

    Got my Caywood Yesterday

Yes indeed, Danny's inletting is first rate. A traditional oil finish would be very nice. Danny seals em with a hard gloss coat. Last trip to the range revealed that my 3 1/2 ft barrel Caywood NW gun likes 90 grains of 3f to put a PRB in the black @ 50 yrds when bisecting the bull with the front...

Problems with my new NW gun...

If the 5/64 hole is workin I would sit on the liner. No need to remove the barrel from the stock when cleaning. Plug the touch hole, pour water into the barrel, slosh it around, pour it out, repeat, finish with a jag and patches plug removed. If you install the liner don't ever take it out...
