    Click bang

before I actually bought a flintlock, I read all of the stuff about "instantaneous ignition" and position of the powder in the priming pan, etc. after a bunch of frustration, I made peace with my flintlock not firing as instantaneously as a caplock. it's part of the fun of the things ... it's...

    Knapping your Rifle's Flint

if you have a table or bench, a flathead screwdriver works great for the task

    Conical Range??

yep, that has been the big boar experience for me. it's just a powder-hungry gun, more so than my .54's or .50's. that's how i ended up running roundballs in it ... its the lightest projectile you can get for it. heavy charges in the gun got me back to the face-slapping recoil (from that...

    Conical Range??

you might try increasing the powder charge. that maxi will be going pretty slow with 85 g. of 2F goex. i think T/C built it for using up to 120 g. of 2F goex. i have a .58 big boar as well. the problem is that the .58 shoots such heavy projectiles ... especially the conicals ... that you...

    Shots between swabing

ever since I discovered the Hoppe's patch lube (really on a whim), I don't swab between shots anymore. before that I was a 3-4 shot, then swab shooter. for me, the stuff just works.

    Horrible Shooting

I have 6 t/c's ... my experience with the ones I own are (1) sometimes they're just right (2) sometimes they have runout (barrel visibly is not drilled straight) and (3) sometimes the front sight is jammed in the dovetail from the factory and not centered. to correct hitting too far to the...

    Acceptable Accuracy with a Flintlock

I can do about a 2" group at 50 yds with my TVM. usually don't get beyond that range with paper targets, at least, cause I get irritated trying to peer at the sights. any accuracy limitation is certainly with this shooter, not the rifle.

    Do you bank prime away......?

interesting discussion and good pics by the OP. I have always read to use less powder and bank it away from the vent. in my own informal tests with two flintlocks (lyman with RMC vent and a TVM), i found that i got much more consistent results if i used more priming powder and didnt try to...

If i had about 1,000 dollars...

I've been very pleased with my TVM southern rifle. Like you I wanted a no frills quality rifle for regular use, and it has been exactly that. I drove up to Corinth and picked mine up at Matt Avance's shop. great guy to chat with, and he's got all kinds of neat goodies in the shop. curly...

    New Englander

For the .50 cal, I can confirm that the manual lists 110 g. as the max charge for a roundball, 100 g. for a maxi or conical. I have one of these rifles in .54 caliber. In .54 cal, T/C seems more comfortable with 120 g. charges for both. My rifle did not shoot particularly well when I first...

    Shooting my T/C Hawken

those CCI musket caps are great, ive heard some of the NSSA folks complain that they're TOO hot, resulting in cap fragments flying everywhere. try poppin' some off w/out earplugs, they're as loud as a .22 as far as ignition goes, i have never had a problem with them

    Shooting my T/C Hawken

paulthewall, what kind of caps are you using? i have constant misfires and FTF's with my t/c caplocks (i have several) with regular CCI #11 caps. if i switch to RWS 1075 caps, no more worries. instantaneous ignition, no matter humidity, fouling, etc. musket caps work well too, RWS or CCI...

    PA hunter to the range

thanks for the responses. let me just add a note here that, despite the sawn flint showing up in the picture, i have been using english flints with it. sawn flint came back with the lock from t/c when i had it re-fitted with the improved hammer.

    PA hunter to the range

took my recently acquired t/c PA hunter to the range yesterday. good experience, but there is some work to be done on the rifle. did all of my shooting w/ a target load of 50 g. 2f swiss powder, .015 eastern maine cotton patching, hoppes no. 9 blackpowder patch lube/solvent. surprisingly...
