    Advice on paper patching?

Having read and re-read a number of times of Idahoron's exploits with the Hot Rod Hawken I am more and more interested in paper patching my Renegade. Buuuuutt............(there's always a "but") My gun is a .54 and has a 1:48 twist. I'm convinced I can make it work if (there's always an "if"...

    A couple ?s

Agreed! I use a .530 ball and a .017 patch, it's a tight fit but I can pop it in by hand with a short starter.

    A couple ?s

Are you saying that your patch thickness was 0.050"? Fifty-thousandths of an inch? Good grief!! :shocked2: What are you using for patches??

Lyman Trade Rifle Barrels to Bobby Hoyt

Thank you rj, I'll have to make another plan, really don't want to go as small as 24 ga.

Lyman Trade Rifle Barrels to Bobby Hoyt

To those who may have done this; Can a Lyman Trade Rifle barrel be bored to 20 ga. smoothbore? If so, do I need to strip the barrel (sights, underlug, rib)before shipping?

    Flintlock Breeching

Good point Don, a pinned barrel would require a bit more care in cleaning. I thank you all for your responses, seems we are pretty evenly split!

    Flintlock Breeching

So as not to hijack the thread on hangfires http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/304784/pid/1640286/post/last/m/1/#LAST I thought I'd ask my question here. There is the thought in my mind that a patent breech may be somewhat less efficient, that is, troublesome, because...

    T/C Cherokee wedge pin

I wish I had taken the time to do this before I lost TWO of those suckers in ONE deer season. :headslap: Do yourself a favor, take the time NOW to install a retention pin! :)

Very nice work, I can't wait to get my loom built!

    Front sights and old eyes

As a Trade Gun has no rear sight I would NOT mount this device on it. But, my Renegade will soon be wearing one. I've been fighting with failing eyesight for several years now due to diabetes and I'm done using iron sights in all but perfect lighting conditions. I could not bar to mount a scope...

    Jim Shockey's Gold

The best thing I can say about Shockey's powder is that it burns clean. Buuuuutttt.....you also get lower velocities than Black. And, as previously mentioned, it is moisture sensitive. If you open a fresh can today, plan on using it up SOON. I won't hunt with it again, too many "blooper" shots...

    Beginning bullet casting 101, HELP!

The Lyman furnace is fine, but in my experience, their ladle is the pits! I find the RCBS ladle to be much superior. Consistency is the key to successful casting. It will take a little time to figure out what works with your mold, your metal, your furnace. I weigh each and every bullet/ball I...
