    issues w my 1803

These two pictures show how I notch the backs of my flints to work in my ill-designed, Euroarms 1803 Harpers Ferry lock. The white piece of plastic in the one picture is what I described in my above post as a means of making the back of the flint higher so it approaches the frizzen with...

    issues w my 1803

Hobowonkanobe, You probably already solved your problem by now, but I have an Italian-made 1803 Harper's Ferry (Navy Arms/EuroArms) that I beleive has the same lock geometry that can cause a lot of problems. The hammer is too close to the frizzen on these rifles so the flint hits it at a 90...

    Italian companies

I forgot to mention...Google the following: "accidental gun tragedies mistaken for burglar" read the multiple hits, and then try to deny that gun owners often shoot their loved ones thinking they are bad guys. Admitting this is not anti-gun...it is just facing the facts. I'm not saying we...

    Italian companies

Don't have a heart attack Paul, we love you too much. The point, is there are irresponsible gun owners out there and we gun owners need to be the ones who address that problem, not the anti-gun crowd. Did you read about the 2 1/2 year old who killed his 6 year old brother over Memorial Day...

    Italian companies

I think the marketing techniques of the gun industry have made single shot, historical rifles undesirable. The focus of gun marketing today is on selling tactical, self-defense firearms to people who will most likely shoot a family member when they mistake them for an intruder. I seldom see an...

Poor Vision - How do you shoot?

I've found that shooting with both eyes open helps quite a bit. This takes some practice, and faith! My rear sight is still a bit fuzzy, but my groups have improved since I started keeping both eyes open. I also use the stick-on, removable sight discs that you put on the lens of your glasses...

    Max kill distance for PRB

This seems like a good place for a picture showing how the lowly, 100% lead roundball flattens out and gets really big as it travels through an unlucky animal (or Redcoat). The pictures below are of a 54 cal. ball that I shot into a big stack of telephone books at 40 yards. It turned into an...

    Round Ball Ballistics Calculator

This won't run on my Windows XP and it wants me to buy "WinZip" when I click the link at "here" I thought my computer was pretty much up-to-date. Evidently it is not.

Maybe having a problem with loading patch and Ballistol

I also use the "dry patch" method using Ballistol and have developed the following routine that is working much better in terms of easing loading: 1. I use a higher concentration of Ballistol of about 1 to 4. I let the patches dry completely, but the patch still gives up quite a bit of oil...

    Lace-on slings

Simple, but effective. I like that more and more as I get older. I may forego the Cabela's version that requires you to lace up a "boot" that fits around the buttstock.

    Lace-on slings

My front sight is very tall, so the one you mentioned might do the trick. Now that you mention it...having a sling that is easy on and easy off is important for my situation. Thank you everyone for all the tips.

    Lace-on slings

Could anyone recommend a lace-on, all leather sling that works well on a half stock flintlock? I know that Cabelas carries two different styles. I'm just wondering if the view of the front sight is sometimes obstructed by the piece of leather that goes around the barrel. Thanks.

    Euroarms 1803 Harpers Ferry

It would be especially nice for the North/South Skirmish guys if someone that really cares about making high-quality replicas (even if they are expensive) would step up and fill the gap left by Euroarms. They did not even have the good grace to take down their website and were not good at...

    Euroarms 1803 Harpers Ferry

John, I have a Euroarms 1803 Harpers Ferry and recently posted my mixed assessment of this rifle on this forum in the "Flintlock - Navy Arms Question" post of 3/26/11. I know this is an old post, but perhaps someone else will have this same question as we get closer to the 200 year anniversary...
