    learning curve...62 fowler

The more you tinker with your new gun the more familiar you will get with it and then the consistency gets more consistent!

    DIY Anvil?

Buddy of mine made a few anvils from RR track. What he did was flip the track upside down, the track is flat on the bottom! He welded the track to a home made metal base, they were pretty decent for knifemaking.

    How To Age Metals

I like to age brass using this method. Buff brass lightly with 0000 steel wool, then clean/degrease brass to get any oily residue off. Wipe brass with cold blue solution, which will immediately turn it almost black. Let dry, then gently buff again with 0000 steel wool, go slow and stop when the...

    Next step for the knife?

Hi Leam, thats a pretty good looking first knife there. If the blade was heated and quenched, its going to need to be tempered or it will be too hard. Run the file on the edge. If you quenched it properly, the file will skate across it, and not bite in. The tempering process depends on the type...

    partial tang

I have used a drywall saw which works well. The one I have cuts a 3/32 slot, so I use 3/32 stock and get a nice fit. I have also used a metal cutting bandsaw to open up a slot. The blade is moving slow so it doesnt stink up the house (too bad) and you have enough control to make sure the cut...

Why no "primitive" style Hunting shows?

Unfortunately its all about the money. Not enough of a market for traditional gear, so no one is going to produce a show like that. Same reason you dont see much small game hunting shows either. I got so sick of the marketing of hunting that I quit watching them all together.

Best handle material is Elk, Moose or Deer antler?

I have found there is a lot of variation between the 3. It depends which part of the antler you are using too. The biggest difference is how thick the outside is vs how pithy and hollow the inner core is. Its best to look it over in person if you can so you get what you want.

    tvm southern rifle

I handled one in 50 cal with a swamped barrel, it was very nice handling. When I get a rifle, it will have a swamped barrel. They are well worth the extra $.

    finishing a hickory hawk handle

I like to put an old looking finish on mine. I sand them down to about 220. Then I give them a good scorhing with a propane torch. Wear gloves, they get hot! While still warm I steel wool them to get the heavy char off. Wipe off with a rag, then while still warm rub in a couple coats of Dark...

    Newbie Question

Hey, why not get something in the white and finish it to see how you like that first. If it comes out good, you might be able to sell it to your friend! :blah:

What to finish antler powder measure with?

Use Fiebings leather dye. Dilute it with alcohol to lighten the color, some of the dyes are very dark. After it dries if you buff it with a paper towel it will shine it up and take off any excess not absorbed. I then put on a coat of Butchers Wax and lightly buff with a rag. This gives it a nice...

    The Extendo Forge

I made one up when I first got started knifemaking, and it was a good learning experience. I had to play around with the hole diameters and torch distance to the opening to get it to work effectively. It works well for small pieces. Like Loyd said, soak the steel after reaching non magnetic...

Anyone use a chambers colonial fowler?

That walnut stocked gun by Mike is mine (he wont forgive me for the shorter barrel)! It is a joy to shoot and carry, and I could not be happier. I have used it for shooting pheasants and squirrels. I had it jug chocked and its great for hunting. I have shot some roundball, but not enough to make...

    Wrapped shot

As mentioned above, I also use post it notes to wrap my shot charges. I carry 6 or 7 in a tin in my bag. When loading I always tear the top off the wrapper as I also saw some loads fail to open. I think having the shot premeasured and wrapped is just an easier way to carry them when in the field.
