Some of the advice on here is down right out dangerous.

Nobody should ever cut a barrel for the sake of matching it to ramrod length.

What happens when or if the wooden ramrod breaks? Shorten the barrel shorten the stock ?

Just make a new ramrod, or get a longer end or stuff the channel.

Done with this thread.
Bye, and thanks for dropping by.

Nothing a backscratcher can't handle, looks just fine but the wad of paper will solve it. I would however use a piece of dowel down the hole. Put a dab of glue on the bottom and stick it to the ramrod with a gob of wax and send it down.

Of course, you are right, I do not know why I did not see the danger in my careless idea!

The correct thing to do is get the ramrod stretcher from Brownell’s or better yet soak it in Viagra for about 10 minutes per inch. There is now a safe and effective remedy we can all get behind.

Or just make a new ramrod the way you want it

I agree, cutting that small amount could lead to a problem.
Much better to use a file.
I was thinking of putting the barrel in a pipe vice, cinch it down, and cut off the offending length with a pipe cutter. Side benefit would be a choke installed at the same time plus a unique reverse blunderbuss crown. :p

Its
Whelp… tonight I attempted to add a brass tip to the bare wood ramrod of my trade gun.

I THOUGHT I made the measurements correct, but it ended up being much too short:

As you can see, the end of the tip is not flush with the muzzle. It’s bothering me tremendously. I fear I’ll have to make a new ramrod from scratch because of this.

Does this kind of stuff bother anyone else? How bad/off does this look to you?

Smokey
Its just fine bud , you did a good job .

WOW!….what a fascinating discussion…. I’m still here just to see a picture of the new ramrod…and the fascinating 4 page discussion of it and inevitable emotional relief of the OP.

I don't know about relief. Asking questions here can often lead to one running the gauntlet of snark, experience and plain bs answers. Don't get me wrong, there are some great guys on here, but....

”…great guys here, but….” …but this is the internet where a person‘s credentials, qualifications and legitimacy is whatever he tells you it is.
The “gauntlet of snark” is often visited upon the most deserving…
(that should launch a 4 page discussion on exactly who the most deserving might be)

There a lot of good suggestions on how to remedy the OP’s problem.

But i am shocked that none of the experts on here haven’t mentioned making the ramrod longer with JB weld or Duct tape.

This is a little bit too OCD for me. Made a rifle where I measured the ram rod length and when it came time to put it together the ramrod was about a 1/2" short of the muzzle. Turns out the ram rod hole was drilled longer than the barrel. Did another where the ram rod stuck out about 1/2" past the muzzle guess what the ram rod hole wasn't drilled deep enough. One day maybe I will learn to check both before I finish everything. No big deal for me though. If it bothers you that much just make another ram rod. Many years back one of the guys I shot with was making a rifle which he had been working on for quiet awhile. He was a tool and die make by trade. At one of the shoots he brought it. He was making a Bedford with lots of inlays. I was looking at it while he was explaining how if there was an inlay on both sides he was making them exactly alike and laying everything out so they were in exactly the same position on both sides, that's why it was taking him so long. I looked at him and said you do realize that you can only look at one side at a time. 2 weeks later at the next shoot the rifle was finished and ready to shoot. Before you jump on me yeah I know there are people on here that will say that is what they expect from someone who is making a rifle. Well my question is are you willing to actually pay for the builders time that he put in to do something like that?

My comment was a joke, or was supposed to be anyhow. If my post is what is being referred to.

The most deserving and knuckleheaded ones don’t get anything out of it
