If your barrel or other metallic piece needs to be cleaned, shined or smoothed out, you can use regular old toothpaste as an
abrasive. It's about the equivalent of 600 grade sandpaper, perhaps a little finer.

I've used it on airplane propellers with great success over the years.
Just go with the grain of the material as you would sandpaper.
