Has anyone had experience with either Schaaf or the chisels sold by Rocklers, wood carving chisels?

Just buy Pfiel chisels and never regret it. Great steel, super sharp. It really depends on what work you are doing...

Don't go cheap. Get some woodcarving catalogs and pick what you want. Some will say don't buy sets. I'm opposite. Sets contain the most used chisels and usually cost less than buying individually. As with any hobby, getting started can be expensive. Check out the sharpening stones in those catalogs also. Personally, I do not recommend using palm chisels. They are handy to use but can, and do, cause nerve damage in the hand. Bad stuff.
