The "Whitneyville" Dragoon was a transitional model using up the last of the Walker parts, specifically the grip frame. It had the rounded grip panel that cut into the back of the frame.

The First model Dragoon (actually 1849 Army revolver) had the square grip/frame intersection like future 1849 Army revolvers. It also had oval cylinder locking recesses like the Whitneyville and Walker models as well as "V" type main spring, and no roller on the hammer where it contacted the mainspring. It also shared the square-back trigger guard of the previous models.

What Curator said...the only basic difference was the grip frame and the slight curvature in the upper grip frame that matches the shape of the grip itself.
