My dad purchased this rifle new sometime I guess in the 1980s. He said the factory 45 barrel didn’t shoot to his liking so he got a Smith to replace it. He at first told me a Douglas barrel, then years later he said he couldn’t remember if it was a Douglas or a green mountain. The barrel maker doesn’t really matter to me. There are no markings on the barrel except for my dads initials engraved. The barrel is 13/16 45 cal. I am under the impression that some of these TC rifles took different size nipples. I ordered a TC nipple a few years ago for it and it fits a tad loose in the threads. I assumed maybe the threads were stripped. Dad can’t remember if this is a Seneca, Cherokee or which model it was. Which model is this and which nipple thread should I try to find for it?

I haven’t touched this rifle in years. I just pulled the lock and it’s a coil spring. Lyman? I’ve never owned a TC rifle.

Do you see TC or Thompson Center stamped or printed on the gun. Wrong trigger guard and trigger for a Cherokee or Seneca. Do see anything that says TC on the gun.

As far as the nipple thread, you will measure or match that up to the actual thread, unless maybe there is something on the barrel identifying the manufacturer.

No there aren’t any markings anywhere on the barrel. The original barrel was trashed when he replaced it with this barrel. Like I stated he doesn’t remember if it’s a Douglas or a green mountain.

A few more pics.

It's a late Cherokee, made after the switch from a DST to a single trigger. (Seneca;s have a brass patchbox & forearm tip)

Here's two early ones, one of each, in .45cal

Thanks. They should have stuck with the double trigger. This trigger is horribly heavy. I’d guess at least 10lbs or more. I looked on Tracks website. They call for a 12-28 nipple for a Cherokee. That might be why the 1/4-28 one I ordered for it years ago doesn’t fit well.

Never saw a replacement barrel on a Cherokee very interesting gun. Those single triggers can be a real nightmare and are very heavy.
Dad gave this rifle to my best friend back in the early 90s. I didn’t even know he’d given it to him. About five years ago my buddy asked me if I wanted my dads gun back. I had no idea he had it and of course I took it back. Dad is still alive, that’s how I new about the barrel replacement. When I got it back the exterior of the barrel and tang was a bit rusty. The bore was lubed good and was perfect but sitting in a closet for years at my buddies took a toll. There is not pitting but it needs rebrowned. I ordered the wrong nipple and when it didn’t fit I just hung it above my mantle. I have very little interest in percussion Guns anymore since I got bit by the flint bug a couple years ago. Today I decided to get it down, find out what it was and order a nipple. It needs to be shot again.

Ok, looking at your more detailed photographs, my first impression was incorrect, and it appears you have at least the bones of a TC Cherokee. The photograph showing the tang, plus the inside of the lock sure look like they are from a Cherokee. The single trigger and trigger guard do not appear in the old TC catalogs I have, but apparently they were made by them. Curious about the trigger, assembly. Wonder if it’s similar to what you find on the TC WMC?

As far as the nipple threads, unless you have a factory TC Cherokee replacement barrel, you can’t be sure they are a 12-28, but for the cost of a nipple you can try.

It is a TC Cherokee stock assembly. But not knowing the barreel maker it’s hard to recommend a nipple size.
