Hump-back flints are an anathema. Flatter is always better. I've ground the humps down on a few flints and it makes a difference. But it's best just to get the flattest ones to start with.

I agree the hump back flints are a pain. To reduce my fumbling, how do you grind it off and how do you hold the flint while doing it. Thanks!

I fumble as much as you do and can't really advise a good way to do it. I've held them in my hand and used a Dremel, bench grinder, etc. I even built a flat top on some with JB Weld. I've also glued small pieces of leather on top. I'm also open to other methods. I've heard of using diamond wheels with Dremel tools but I have yet to even see any for sale locally.
