Being a Black Powder New-B, today I tried testing out my T/C Replica Hawkins .45 cal Flintlock for my very first time shooting a Flintlock. From reading past posts about the do's and don'ts I figured it was time on trying her out. I only had 2F BP and figured not loading a ball this time yet, just used 50 grains and doubled up on some wadding instead in case it would not fire. I do have a large grassy berm in the back yard with plenty of woods behind it all so its safe shooting. It was louder than I expected, and no doubt got me further hooked into BP shooting!! Just did 2 blank shots then cleaned her up and called it a day, until I hit the range for some loaded up rounds. Had to of course video it, in slow motion. Just love it!

now you have a serious dilemma that there is no retreating from. but that is a good thing. LOL!

took the .32 squirrel out yesterday- hasn`t been out in a couple of years. Sights were off and couldn`t remember the load, so i had to work it back up. Used Dutch`s system at 8-1 balistol .31 PRB cast of harder wheel weights over a greased wool wad, and finally got touching holes at 25 yds. i`ll work on that today again once i get covid tested This morning. Really weird that i can`t taste my coffee, other than that the symptoms are very mild.

Today I received my ram rods from Track of the Wolf and thought I’d drop a note to share my first impressions. Their website is hard to use, but they have great and varied inventory, shipped quickly in spite of me screwing up my address and they got the my order correct. I’m sure the Delrin rod is stronger than the wood one, because the material specs show the Delrin to be twice as strong though its kind of floppy. It is brown and so doesn’t look bad, but both the wood one and the Derin one are about a centimeter shorter than the stock ramrod. They will work fine but I don’t like the looks of them as much as the stock one when it’s in the rings, they sit a little back of the muzzle. The steel cleaning/range rod looks like it will be fantastic, I think it will work out great. I got the 12ga. jag for cleaning and loading. I’ll give it all another go tomorrow.

Saturday-

Our NMLRA Charter Club, the Yadkin Valley Rangers held our first Basic Muzzleloading Course training at Camp Raven Knob in NC. We had 6 students, wish there had been more, but things went very well. We had one who came that was completely new to muzzleloading and his perspective was invaluable to us old timers. Next up on the agenda, a shoot for the Scouts on 10/30 and a scheduled Instructor level class in November.

Took the Pedersoli Mortimer .451 rifle to the range this morning, only the second time to have it out. A paper plate sized group at 100 yards isn't too exciting but you have to start somewhere.

Shot some more clays. Used the new range rod and tried the Delrin rod. The steel range rod from Track of the Wolf is awesome. I would be tempted to take it hunting in spite of the weight and bulkiness. Delrin rod works but after the steel one, it’s night and day easier with the handled steel range rod. Range rod with 12ga. jag made cleaning much easier too. I ended up running out of gunpowder rather than energy. Great day. On my last shot, had a lady clapping for me. Pretty fun being the only guy out there with a muzzleloader. It would be a real marathon to shoot a whole sporting clays course with a muzzleloader.

Cleaned the bandsaw upper guide assembly on my 12" Craftsman bandsaw.

Put new tires on it Sunday and didn't like the line up of the blade in the top guide.

I will put it back together tomorrow with a shim so there is adjustment available.

I have some Alabama hickory to cut for a new ramrod.

tuned the lock and trigger on a new to me .50 hawken. waited for Fedex.
jacked up my wood splitter to fix a flat tire. waited for Fedex
cleaned a couple front stuffers that didn't need it. waited for Fedex
carried in a tub full of firewood. waited for Fedex
took a nap. waited for Fedex to deliver the flintlock stock and lock they have had in their system for 3 weeks, hoping the stock isn't kindling now.

Decided to put a few parts into a pistol. Starting setting the barrel and once finished, started on setting the lock.
Making a trigger and butt cap out of brass.

Here are some pics...

Received a .58 sizing die and 3 minies from Tree Man in the mail today. Shipped off a .31 replica Colt revolver to Phil Coffins to restore to shooting. Got my Pfizer booster shot at the old people hospital in town. Told old gaffer sitting next to me my second shot contained Viagra and it really worked great. My wife slugged me in the shoulder. We left after that.

Made and tested some homemade flints today. Ain’t store bought perfect, but they fit the gun and make lots of sparks. Made from rocks found here on the farm. That’s one advantage of flintlock over percussion I think.

Cleaned up and blued my TC hawken barrel that Mr. Hoyt rebored to .54 1:66 and put it all back together.
Sure is a lot lighter now.
