Only m/l stuff I got to do today , was between thunderstorms , I held my next scratch build , to start after deer season. It's a .555 cal . smooth longrifle in walnut. I'm excited , the stock and barrel are freebees. Barrel is a reject from the old Getz shop , and the stock is a horribly tortured piece of ingrown bark walnut with the forearm end broken off , at the entrance to the entry r/r thimble. Have already added a replacement walnut forearm, and inlet the barrel. If I can get all the chores done around the castle , and wife , and I can stay healthy , might be able to build...........oldwood

Still running ball, I'm on a binge, .490 and .530 today. I've got about one more day of casting and I'll be set for a couple of years.
I need to do that as well. I shot my .54 calibre Early Plains Rifle last week…had to borrow RBs from my dad.

Today I shot my .40 calibre Kibler, 1st time to the range.

Beautiful day to shoot, perfect conditions.

3 sets of 3 targets…5 to 7 shots per target, load development.

Suddenly I have 4 RBs left. I need to start running ball…

I made an adapter plug for my Traditions KY percussion rifle conversion project out of an M10 bolt on my lathe. Now just waiting for a good health day to inlet the L&R flintlock.

Getting ready for the North Carolina State Muzzleloaders shoot coming up Sept 9, 10, 11. Built and have practiced with my 40 cal cap lock on a new set of cross sticks, but …I think the dimensions (40” ) were designed for younger shooters. This 72 year old body don’t bend that way anymore. Also shot my 1863 Bridesburg musket at the 8 ring 100 yard target, off hand, that one always is my worse. Tried both 2F and 3 F in my musket, shooting .570 rb .015 patch, 70 grains at 100. Seems to prefer the 3, report and recoil with the 2F seemed weak. Both Goex.
You need to try a .577 Minie and 45 grains of FFFg. A lot easier on the shoulder and probably more accurate.

Sunday, I went into the shop to work on a cutdown 1853 Enfield that I bought in the winter. It didn't have a hammer; the shaft on the tumbler was broken off. However, it came with an original hammer. I dug through my parts and found a tumbler. It needed to have the half cock notch opened up. I fitted the sear to the tumbler and then I needed to fit the hammer to the shaft. It was too loose and I shimmed it using brass from a flattened out .38 special case. Now it is good to go.

I was able to put the finishing touches on my percussion to flintlock plug and mock it up in the Traditions barrel.

I am so glad to see that gun doesn't shoot worth a hoot, just to show you my heart is in the right place i will let you sell it to me! 🤣
That is the perfect gun! stunningly beautiful and works as it should.
you have a gem there!

today UPS showed up with my Henry Parker combo gun! right now it is disassembled and the bores are soaking.
was polishing the rust(very light) off the tumbler and bridle when the wife returned from town. things turned fecal quickly. she brought home two new thunder mugs and i had to stop the important stuff to install one. now i'm recovering enough strength to go back to the combo. when i can i will post good pictures of this neat gun. a teaser. this is the lockup mechanism
I will hereafter refer to this gun as a Henry Parker as there are no other markings on the entire gun.

I shot both my 54 and 40 yesterday and today.

The 54 likes 60 grains of 2f, a 530 and a .018 with bear grease. I found it interesting that 20 grains of powder more translated into 8” high at 100 with a 12” spread.

The 40 wants 40 grains of 3f, a 389 with .018 bear grease. At 60 grains it is 12” high and 12” to the right at 50.

20 grains doesn’t seem like that much in either case but the learning curve in this game is steep!

I joined a ML forum after I got some good info on rust bluing. Then I rust blued my kit barrel! Well, got started on it anyways. Also put coat number 3 (?) on the stock, letting it soak in a bit now. Probably turn on an old movie and rub it in after a bit here.
