Picked this up the other day here in Lancaster, PA. Critical specs are 1.125 barrel at breech tapering to about 1.032 at muzzle. Barrel is 31.75" long and 55 caliber smooth bore. Stock is plain maple with remnants of faux striping. Think the lock is a Leman based on remnants of their scrolling stamp. Area that would have been stamped with their name is too far gone from corrosion to read. It is a well made gun, pretty much untouched but I suspect the barrel was shortened at some point and possibly bored smooth. I need to turn a new lock screw and get the copper washer and old screw off. I initially thought it might be a Leman, but the hardware doesn't look quite right. Pretty sure it is some form of factory gun though.

Looks a nice plain piece, a well used working rifle, maybe a trip to Mr Hoyt for re rifling? I think you are right it would not have been a smooth rifle from the get go, suspect a bit late in the era for that. St Louis made?

I am in Lancaster County, my guess is it was produced here in PA by one of the rifle factories, but who knows. The barrel is heavy enough to be re-bored, but I will probably leave it as is. I will fix the lock screw however.
