I think that someone made it to their druthers, w/o regard to "traditions"

The blade looks pretty stout, and could pretty much be driven through most non-metallic items ( and maybe through some metallic stuff)

Did you make it ?

No. Found it in the giant estate "pile" we are liquidating. It is old but still razor sharp. The scabbard is really nicely made almost factory but the knife is clearly custom and nice quality. The blade is 1/4"+ thick at base as well. Nice change from sorting the "barrel O' bayonets". Who was it that said "you can do anything with bayonets but sit on them"???

Its in the estate so could be free to me and yes one of the ugliest and possibly scariest knives i have ever seen. "Short of a gun it would get the job done."

Agree with Necchi. A modern fantasy design mixed with a good dose of "ugly", and healthy shot of "odd". I'd grind it into something closer to 18th-19th century shape and find a way to get rid of or minimize the hilt.

I took off the grips to look for markings. its over 1/4" thick steel for full length and looks professionally made for "business". Gives impression being very old but the aluminum guard gives me pause. May make a brass guard and leave it alone

I have a hog killing knife that was owned by my grandfather. It’s well over fifty years old and the handle scales were attached with flat head screws and nuts like that one.
