What’s this gun?

My dad recently acquired this gun. Anyone have any idea where, when it might have been made? Barrel has J. DOUGLAS engraved on it. Side plate has O.H. Engraved on it.
Overall length 56”
LOP 13.5”
Barrel 41.5”

So a little online research indicates J. Douglass made percussion rifles in Huntington County Pennsylvania circa 1850. Does anyone know anything about J. Douglass? Anyone have a gun stamped J. Douglass on the top of the barrel?

Why? I have originals as old and older that look as good and in a few instances better.

I don’t think it’s a restock. Everything looks original

I don’t think it has been restocked recently, probably 150 years ago, but the workmanship seems less than “original” for a known gunsmith. Maybe it was just over- refinished at some time.
Very nice rifle anyway.

be my guess by the proud metal in places. still gorgeous ! i wouldn't turn it down!

I see a Huntingdon County patchbox, triggers, trigger guard, buttplate and J Douglass were father/son Huntingdon County makers. Sr dies 1841, Junior was born 1840, and I would opine this to be Jr's work.

It appears that all of the patina is gone, suggesting that it has been heavily cleaned.

There was a longrifle show at Delmont (north of Greensburg)last weekend, and any number of guys there could have identified it.

The maker or assembler of the metal parts may not have done the woodwork if it is a re-stock

Currently hanging over the mantle. Something’s wrong with the cock…it will not move from the half cock position. And I’m afraid to take it apart for fear that I might damage something. For now we’ll just admire it where it hangs, but maybe someday I’ll try and figure out what’s wrong with it.
