So today was heavy rain, again.
As mid day arrived I set off to visit the same place I spied that fox the other day.
I wasn't after the fox but was after a rabbit that I never fulfilled last visit.
It was still very damp in the air when I happened on a 10yd rabbit and full of ignition doubts I lined up on the rabbits head threading the shot through branches and twigs.
Sure enough the damp slowed the fire. A long whoosh and an eternity to discharge the rabbit actually reacted quick enough to dodge the shot and get to earth at 10yds!
I reloaded again, dried the pan, frizzen and flint.
The wind got up, the sky got brighter, it felt like dryer air. Good I whispered to myself.
As I made my way upstream of running water to my left I saw something big coming my way.
It was Charlie the fox.
He went behind cover, I got ready and as soon as he broke cover on a determined trot I flicked the flintlock through whilst pulling the trigger.
BOOM, no hesitation this time!
I was expecting to see it leg it but no, as the smoke cleared it was piled up but writhing so I released the hound!View attachment 111629

That dog is vicious! I will give you a dollar and take him off your hands. He reminds me of my Blue Heeler. I have said many times, "a man that has a horse, a dog and one true friend is a very wealthy man".

Love the video of Jess! :thumb: Good thing you saw the rabbit first and got a fresh prime in. That is a very nice red fox. I wish we had more reds in my area. Around me it's mostly all greys, but still of different color phases as they can have several phases in a litter. On a recent hike I found a dead red fox in a field. I felt kinda bad because they are quite rare around me. I would much rather have seen a dead yote or raccoon of which we have way too many.

For everyone's interest, the Eastern Coyote....or referred to as a Coywolf, can be a hybrid and can also contain domesticated dog. I watched an hour long program on them one evening. They came in from Canada and are not just in the NE....the program I watched showed them actually within the Chicago city limits as well as other major city areas, mostly east of the Mississippi, but some even into my home state of Minnesota. While one guy in the news story questions the reality of these hybrids, the program I watched stated that DNA proves that there are hybrids of coyotes and wolfs.

Here's a news story I found on the subject including video of one. The one in the video doesn't look too large to me compared to ones in the program I watched.

Coyote-Wolf hybrids existed in Algonquin Provincial Park, about 4 hours north of Toronto, when I camped there in the 1980's. The Wolf half got the Hybrid to hunt in packs, I believe.
