Can anyone explain how the lock chain located on the side of the trail on a Civil war cannon was used ?

I understand it was used with a chock to keep the carriage from running over the horses on downhill slopes

Thanks.....do you know how that was done ? The chain only looks long enough to be used (somehow) on one wheel, so I'm not too clear on how that helped ....????

Yes I think only one wheel was chocked to keep it from rolling. so the rig slid instead. I hope someone will verify this for us.
