As mentioned above, it is a tourist item. It seems the European styled ones started showing up in the 1950's and 60's. And probably continued later. The Middle Eastern styled pieces are still being made today. Here is one for comparison. All metal parts, including the barrel, are rough castings. These show up on auction sites fairly often.
