There was a relic action that just sold for $159 on ebay. Just the buttstock and underhammer action. The breechplug had completely rusted off. It was a Hilliard style mechanism - the best part were the 11 photos of the 'relic'. Great enlargements with detail of the breech and hammer, trigger and attachments. The Item number: 7208354711
the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayIS...=7208354711&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1
Click on the photos to see the detail - shows how the use to put 'em together if your interested. Mike

Man that's beautiful. Brings tears to my eyes.

If you paid Norm Flayderman $3450, you can have it. http://www.flayderman.com/ It is one nice underhammer! I've spent an inordinate amount of time trolling the internet for Underhammers - my mis-spent middle-age, keeps me out of trouble. Thank god Al Gore invented the internet though? (you just keep thinking that Al)

Got to love that Elgin. Ive got some photos I cant get to of the Hillard breech system , can anyone just draw how the keep the barrel on? Its not pinned ,screwed, it looks to be built into brass trigger guard, and top tang, is that about right ? anyone? Fred

If you click on the link for the auction, you'll see 11 photos of the underhammer. Click on the photos & they enlarge, then copy them to the hard drive of your computer.

if you look closely at this, you can see that the frame is a squared off 'U' shape. The breechplug appears to have been fixed permanently to the iron frame. The brass plates are screwed into the stock, not the iron frame.
