I haven't been on the forum in quite a while because of my work schedule (75-80+ hour weeks) this year. I also haven't gotten the trigger time that I had planned to be ready for my Newfoundland moose hunt. My work load has finally let up, but I leave for the hunt on the 18th of October. I have always used an 80 gr load of FFg in my .54 for hunting which has included deer, bear, caribou & bobcat. The ball has passed thru everything, even killing two deer with a single shot twice. But, a moose is a lot larger animal & I'm wondering if I might need to up the charge a little?
I've got a few days off before time to leave & I'm hoping to make it to the range at least a few times. Do you all think I should stick with my usual losd or try to bump it up some?

I would think it should be just fine. Have you talked to your guide or don't ya have one. Try adding some powder and see what the accuracy is. If not go back down to whats been working

I've used 100gr-2f for Colorado elk with great results. I've always found the balls under the skin on the off side. Broadside shots! Their Shiras moose are about the same size, just with longer legs.

You could also consider trying some wheel-weight balls as another possibility if you want more penetration, with or without more powder.

Good hunting,
Joel
