Thunder box or Campaign toilet, what can you tell me about them ?
Anyone use one ?

No, actually it's period piece with a porcelain bowl or chamber pot maybe. (This one might be a reproduction or later piece though)
They date back to around 1810.
 
Trying to figure out how it works exactly and whats in the side compartment.

I'd swear I saw an identical one on Pinterest, complete with chemical toilet.

Similar are popular with people who do the one and two week events in the S.C.A.
 
My mother had an antique one in her house. She used to sit a potted plants in I always assumed they were more like a chamber pot or something used in the home before indoor plumbing than a field or campaign item.
