"This is the diary of one of a "forty-niner", and the trials and tribulations that he faces in his search for riches.

From May 1850 through to June 1852 the life of Alfred T. Jackson, one of the forty-niners, was compiled by Chauncey Canfield.

Good book, his diary touches on the beginnings of Hydraulic mining.
Another good read on that era 1850-1852 also is “The Gold Seeker” by Jean-Nicolas Perlot
Perlot has a smoothbore he has with him on his travels. He is in the southern Mother lode were Jackson is in the northern. I wouldn’t say one book is better than the other just different.
