Agreed that Chadron area is sort of bleak. There is one area near town that college students used as a night time party area and we all called it "The Moon", as it was that barren. North from there in South Dakota you can get into the Custer National Forest, and it's a different kind of area altogether. Custer National Forest is mostly in Montana, but stretches into South Dakota as well and has some interesting areas.
 
I live north of the Black Hills about fifteen miles. I spend most of my time on our place but have snowshoed and ridden the back roads in the hills on my motorcycle. We live in South Dakota about fifteen miles east of the Wyoming border.
