I went on a little woods walk dec 13 with my Hopkins Allen under hammer in tow, I went in totally blind but figured it was better than sitting at home. I slipped around the side of a hill and ended up in a thicket, I heard something above me and saw a deer through the small poplars and green brier bushes well this got me shacking like the 1st time I had ever seen a deer while hunting as a boy, I could make out it was a decent buck but man it was thick, too thick to even attempt a shot, then a doe trotted in and he spooked her and she ran off. The buck meandered around and I lost sight of him for a pretty good while, I finally heard him take off I guess the wind shifted and he busted me. I wasn’t even disappointed I was having a ball with my muzzleloader. I slipped on around the hill and went up a pretty steep point to a little flat, found several deer beds on it and a lot of sign. I decided to sit down a the base of a small white oak and enjoy some sun, the view I had over looked a well used gap between the flat I was on and a mowed field about 100 yards away. I saw a big old fat fox squirrel come down a dead tree and shoot over the hill then a grey squirrel snooping through the leafs looking for his lost dinner. Suddenly I heard the sound of a deer coming from behind me, it was a doe at about 75 paces away. She crossed the gap and went down toward where I had jumped the buck earlier but at the last moment she turned and started coming my direction but below me I gave her a quick bleet and she froze at around 60 or so yards,I already had the under hammers sights on her then I cut loose a .440 round ball pushed by 60 grains for powder I could tell she was hit good by her reaction. I gave her 30 minutes and went to where she was standing at the shot, I found hair and a nice crimson trail to follow. Well long story short we had bacon wrapped tenderloin tonight at work. I want to thank everyone that helped me by answering my questions a few months back. I’m hooked now.
