Picked up a let's say neglected New Englander .50 cal. the other day. After a little 0000 steel wool she cleaned much better than I could have hoped. I don't currently have any 50 cal. ball. What has been you guys experience with these guns, they like a .490 ball, .495 ?

Mine like .490 + .015.
Squirrel head accuracy with 50 grains FFFG.
Practical big game accuracy with 80 to 100 grains FFG. YMMV

With the right patch size you can use any .485-.495 ball.

The most popular choice is the .490 with a .015 or .020 patch but the other size balls with a thicker or thinner patch will work just fine and dandy.

The key is ball/patch fit more than anything.
