I got the stocks together but the under part their is about 1/8 more stock then the plate. Can I remove that much stock?

A friend had another plate, the one he gave me took up a lot of the space. I can now sand flush. This kit has been a learning curve.
 
The sights are pretty tall. The last one of these I made I added a faux rawhide repair to cover up the joint.
Now that is a big space but keep inmind the purpose of the fore stock is to hold ramrod pipes. Fore stocks were scary thin on old guns, you can remove a lot of wood on these
