I agree using the wad or patch over the powder. Might be the heat is burning your patch up. Had that happen to me. Shots went everywhere, till I started using a wad or patch over the powder. Also you might try to use the largest round ball and patch that will fit your rifle. Helped on mine. Plus I swab between shots.

Do not use the bore brush. :shocked2:
That can and often get stuck.
Four aught (0000) steel wool is good.
A bath with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) will clean out any stubborn gunk.
 
I'm using .530 Ball now and .018 patches. I'm finding .535 and .015 patches. Trying to figure out the patch size mostly if I go up the that size ball.
