It took nearly 6 months for my SAR application to be approved. But I'm a member now!
I had a difficult time finding an ancestor who was a Rev. War veteran because most of my ancestors of that time were non-combatant "Quakers". My wife finally found one for me through her DAR resources. Peter Mattson, born in Philadelphia, PA. in 1741. Joined the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental Army, as a private. Wintered at Valley Forge, and fought in several battles. After the war he bought land in Bucks County, north of Philly, and settled down as a farmer.

I'm glad this thread got revived. It's making me consider looking into membership. I have a handful of patriot ancestors with service records... Roland Ware (1761-1864) of NC comes to mind first. He served beginning in 1778 guarding the NC legislature "from the Torys and Brittish", and later volunteered in a "light horse" company in Halifax NC.
He lived to be 103 years old. The 1860 census, near Athens TN, lists his occupation as "Soldier of 1776".
He is my 5th great grandfather thru his granddaughter Maxey, line 20.

I'm kind of late to the party, but what kind of documentation does SAR need to show lineage? I believe I've got 2 or 3 but all I have to show is what I've found on the genealogy sites. The ancestry is all on my Dad's side, was never close to that side of the family and of those I am have no idea their genealogy past great grandparents.

Go to their site at www.sar.org . Specifically, for the application preparation guide, https://www.sar.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/APG-Approved_21_Nov_2022.pdf
You can contact your local chapter for help, or with questions. It is common to be grandfathered in by proving descent from someone already in an approved SAR/DAR application. That way, you don't have to do all the 250 years worth of work.
Like I mentioned above, I'm not a member either, but am interested.
