Was up on Signal hill today here in St John`s. checked out the Queens Battery with it`s 6 32 pdrs pointed out over the north atlantic. Very impressive and commanding view.

Then went down the hill to Fort Waldegrave. All thats left of the fort is one of two guns it had that points out over the St John`s harbour. It`s purpose was to cover the harbour if any ships got past the Queen`s Battery and other guns that are no longer there.this 32 pounder does not appear to be rendered inactive like so many of the other guns at historic sites in Canada

the amount of guns and other points of historical interest in Newfoundland is amazing.
150 yards down the hill from my house in Torbay, NL is a point called "the Battery". nothing gets named "the Battery" unless there had actually been a battery of guns there in the past. i`m told that where my house is built now, that there had at one time, stood stables for the Royal artillery`s horses. there are at least two cannon in this town in people`s yards that were found in the area.
St John`s alone has so many historic sites, and it should, being the oldest city in N America. the French and British fought over control of much of the island, there is a French fort at Placentia, NL that was destroyed by the brits. i have not been there, but there are some French guns to be seen there.
