My barrel came in today and I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the .50 caliber that I was expecting mic'd out at .542. I am going to make a wad punch on my lathe tonight, I am thinking .550, does that sound about right?

Got my punch made, ended up at .565" so .023" bigger than the bore, and cut out a bunch of fiber gasket material for wads. It seems to seal up well. Got to shoot a few times today and from what I can tell it shoots straight and keeps a tight pattern. I loaded it with 60 grains of 2f, a fiber card then the same volume of 6 shot with another card on top. It didn't have any holes in the pattern that a squirrel head could fit thru at 25 yds. I also shot at the end of a small stain can and got 12 pellets in that little circle at twenty five yards. Can't wait for a little cooler weather so I can get after some squirrels with it.

Sounds good. I would have just tried standard sizes of 9/16 and 5/8 inch to start, but if what you have works, no point in worrying or changing.

I didnt have any size of punches that would have worked but I do have a lathe and a mill. Only takes a few minutes to have a nice punch in whatever size I need. But I agree, if I didnt have the means to make them, I would have tried a standard size one that I could have bought locally.
