The CSA issued letters of marque for privateers between 1861-64 (although most Confederate privateers were only active in the first year of the war). Does anyone know what small-arms these privateer crews were carrying?
I've seen plenty of generic references to privateer small-arms ("revolvers", "muskets", etc) but no detail on make, caliber, etc.
Since privateers were basically private contractors, and outfitted themselves with their own funds, I'm expecting they would have had a wider variety of small-arms than guys in the regular CS navy. I do know that, as far as artillery, some Confederate privateers were using cannons that were leftovers from the War of 1812 ... so perhaps the same was true for their small-arms?
