Here is an interesting find. A handmade single barrel percussion shotgun, bore diameter approx. .69, barrel length 36.5”, OAL 53”.
Some aspects of the build are crude by today’s standards, but are what I’m coming to find were not uncommon on these builds of yesteryear when they used whatever parts and pieces they had handy. That said, the condition overall is good. The main detractor is some pitting around the nipple. The bore is in rather nice condition (see photo). I removed the nipple and the clean out screw and put them back with some nipple grease so they will come back out easily. I think it’s probably due for a new nipple. I’ve only fired it once.
Through a tale of woe that I shan’t recount here, I broke the ramrod. I will say it was user error rather than a failing on the guns part. I’m including the pieces which includes a pinned head of proper size that should be easy to fit to a new rod. It also has a wooded tube carved to fit over the muzzle, I assume a funnel of sorts to expedite loading. The astute observe will note there are no sights on this scatter gun.
It is a rather attractive stock with some nice figuring. Where someone so motivated, a little shaping and perhaps a few finishing touches like a little cleaner solder job on the ramrod pipes could make this a rather attractive gun. Or for those less ambitious, it could be put back into service without such niceties. I see no flaws that would raise concern with safety or function, but I’m not a gunsmith so as with any used firearm, please inspect before use or have someone qualified do so.
That’s about all I know, about this piece, but if I can answer any questions I’ll be happy to do so. I’d like $265 shipped where legal in the CONUS. USPS money order preferred.
