I have been building Longrifles for 40 years. In that time I used 1 precarved stock at request. I notice today that most all of the rifles for sale on TOW have the same profile but named different Counties. There are so many of the Lancaster stocks used its getting rediculous. As a builder try using your own designs and make a 1 of a kind rifle. 100 years from now Historians are going to say they all used the same stock for everything. TGP

And your problem is?? If they're all the same, that would make yours stand out more, would it not? There are immeasurable minor differences, but few major differences in Lancaster stock shapes. Even a Virginia rifle can be made from a classic Lancaster profile, and still be correct. It is the truely classic shape. If you think you can change history, good luck.

I know several builders who frequent this site who make 1 of a kind muzzleloaders everyday.

TVM uses stock blanks, not pre carved.

Do you make a radicaly differnt design each time you make a gun? It must be hard to come up with different ideas each time

TOTW isn't the only company out there supplying pre carved stocks.
Hopefully you can see the difference in the shapes between the guns shown in these links? http://longrifles-pr.com/bedford.shtml http://longrifles-pr.com/earlylancaster.shtml http://longrifles-pr.com/afigthorn.shtml http://longrifles-pr.com/transkentucky.shtml

May I also add that the pre-carved stocks are just a starting place for the builder.
As long as there is enough wood on the precarve it is possible to reshape the stock into many different shapes representing many different schools. Of course a person can't turn a Bedford into a Lancaster but a man with your experience would know what I mean.

This is a TN rifle built from an A. Verner precarve. Using a precarved stock saves considerable wood removal time. I guess it depends on what you want to spend your time doing and if you have a bandsaw large enough to slab wood off a blank.

Heck, one can even start with a factory built rifle and rework it into something unique. This "half-stock trade gun" began life as one of the last of the T/C Pennsylvania Hunters bought cheap on close out.
