I purchased this old Manton muzzleloader as a wall hanger but before I just hang it on wall, I would like to make sure there's nothing special about it. From the markings it appears to be proofed in Birmingham between 1855 and 1868. Does anyone know what the "10" on one barrel and "11" on the other barrel means? The only other markings are "Manton" on the side plates and "London Fine Twist" on the top side between the barrels. I seen the hammers do not match. I suppose this is from one getting damaged and replaced at some point. Any more information anyone can provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The 10 and 11 should have something to do with your bore size. I’m not an expert, I only know that much by reading on this forum. It may be bore size in millimeters which would make it about a .410? Seems odd that they’re different numbers though.

Thank you Stykbow! I had a feeling it may have something to do with size also but was confused about them being different as well. I haven't found anything online yet that shows any of these guns with different numbers stamped on them like this one.

Hi,
Realize your shotgun has no connection with the Manton family. It is a hardware store grade gun marketed by many makers from Birmingham and Liege, Belgium, using the Manton name as a marketing ploy. It may be that one of your barrels measures 10 bore (gauge) and the other 11 bore. That would not really make much difference in your loads or wad sizes.

@dave_person I thought I had read on this forum that these shotguns from across the pond had the bore size marked in millimeters. You obviously know more than I do, so I have a question. Without having the gun in hand or a view of the bore in a pic, how do you know which way it’s marked?

Hi Stykbow,
Just measure the bore. If the 10 and 11 were mm, the bores would be under 1/2" in diameter. Because of the Birmingham, England proof marks, I suspect the barrel is marked by gauge or bore rather than in mm.
