Here's a few pipe axes I've made over the years. Need to get another one made up soon.

Question. How did you put in the brass inserts? Taper one end and then tap, pull out, file the marks, repeat? I have an all brass pipe axe and I want to put in a steel bit. A lot of the ones have the bit dovetailed but I'm worried about a tight fit. The other idea was to square the bit on the brass edge, saw in the middle and drive in a steel wedge, hoping the brass moves enough.

The best way to attach the steel bit in a brass head is to dovetail and solder. Some of the originals were thought to have had the head cast to the bit. That would be the very best way but it's not an easy task to accomplish.
