It kind of looks like someone dipped the entire gun in varnish.
What is the best solution to clean it with?

I don't know about "best" but lighter fluid aka naphtha is safe for antiques, paint, fine wood finishes, it might work, it might not, but it can't hurt anything.

Well I took it apart as far as I cared to this morning.
I am 99.9% sure the gun is not original.
The barrel has 3 spots for pins on the bottom and the stock has 2. The stock has spots filled from the previous barrel pins.

The circles that are by the letters on top of the barrel carry past the rear sight.
Someone has drilled and tapped the barrel for a rear sight. Rear sight inlet is very shallow.

Here is the back of the lock. Yes I know the Phillips head screw is wrong. Also someone has repaired the notch.

Back of the barrel. Bottom of the barrel has some pitting.

Went to TOW and bought my supplies.
Went to clean the barrel today and low and behold the gun is a 38 cal.
