He must have been discharged right after Washington crossed the Delaware.

The Wikipedia story says he was "discharged in December 1776".

Washington crossed the Delaware on the 25th-26th, December 1776.
 
I believe one of the reasons Washington pushed the issue when he did was that many of his men's enlistments ran out at the end of the year.
