Old Hickory or Russell Green River 3.5 inch old fashion carbon steel Paring Knife with wood handle is what I used for an coon's age when I was young.

I'm currently using a no name China exported inexpensive carbon steel (probably T10) straight razor.
So far it's doing the job.

I was warned that I'd never be able to shave with it, if I used it for a patch knife.
That's O.K. though.
I managed to give up that nasty, vile, disgusting, expensive habit way back in 19 and 88. 😷
Why would I wanna start again?
Admittedly, I ugly with a beard ... but more so without, in my opinion. 😷

You can see my story in 'The Hunting Journal' about a patch knife I made for myself 43 years ago. Very unusual circumstances and outcome. Here is that knife.

Great thing you done there that knife has some history behind it and good looking to boot. If I was you and ever get back to that area I would take some pictures and write down the story behind the origins of the knife handle and its story. In 2019 I hunted Wyoming for antelope his head now graces my wall but during the hunt I looked for arrow heads when I could,no luck with that but am going back in 2021 to hunt the speedsters again along with mule deer And I will look again for arrow heads only want one if the gods smile on me and I find one it will be framed with the location I hope to find one and a brief description. Then hung under the mount.
